An attribute of any image that describes the degree of clarity of the edge(s) of that image. Sharpness is applied to photographs, digital images, scans, proofs, line art, a computer video display, a printed reproduction, type characters, or any graphic image whatsoever. As the edge of an image is sharpened, there is an increase in detail, with an appearance that looks more "in focus." Too much sharpening, however, can diminish image quality. Image edge sharpness is increased—photographically or digitally—by means of unsharp masking.
