A network protocol (essentilly composed of two separate protocols) that allows individual computers and networks to communicate with each other. The basic protocol, IP, is a packet switching protocol that facilitates the trnsfer of datas. IP is supplemented by TCP, which basically involves error correction and detection, as well as establishing a fault-free connection between systems. TCP/IP was originally developed by the Department of Defense for ARPANET, but has now become a standard both for LANs that connect to UNIX and other minicomputer systems, as well as for individual connection to the Internet.
