An often self-imposed purgatory in which one compulsively needs to possess the newest versions of hardware and software. However, some update hells are imposed externally; as one accrues more and more computers, it may become necessary to keep all hardware and software compatible with each other. An update (or upgrade) of one may require the update of them all.
