Alternate Key

A key included on computer keyboards used to modify another key. The Alternate Key is added to expand the number of functions that a particular key can have. See also Command Key, Control Key and Option Key. The Alternate Key is usually designated Alt, as in the common keyboard combination Ctrl-Alt-Del. On the Macintosh computer, the Option key is used in lieu of the Alternate key.
