Mastering

In mass CD production, an optical recording process that transfers digital information (stored on a premastering tape) to a glass master, or a glass disc containing an image of the pit and land pattern desired on the ultimate CD. The glass master is used to create a metal stamper which can then be used to stamp multiple copies of a disc. A glass master can also be generated from an analog master tape.
