An editor is also a term for any software utility or feature within another application that allows rudimentary text entry and editing, but without the extensive formatting capability of a full-fledged word processor. A program used for telecommunications, for example, will have an editor in which the user can type messages for transmission. In this sense, an editor is also known as a text editor.
