Right-Handed Coordinate System

A means of specifying the coordinate system in three-dimensional mathematical modeling: the right hand is extended palm out, fingers up in front of the viewer. The negative values of the x-axis (or horizontal axis) are indicated by the thumb, which points to the left; the y-axis (or vertical axis) is indicated by the index finger, which points up; and the negative values of the z-axis (or axis providing depth) are said to emerge from the palm, pointing away from the viewer. See also Left-Handed Coordinate System.
