A URL comprises an access method (which is almost always hypertext transport protocol, or HTTP, but could also be FTP or Gopher), followed by two slashes, the server name, and the names of the specific directories and files that correspond to the Web page. Thus, the address "http://www.splinky.com/printing" indicates that a particular site is on the server "splinky" and is a file called "printing."
